Question Wednesday!

Do you think the book covers reveal anything about the story?

(as in the positioning of the birds)

I think the colors on the cover are definatly part of the books. In the first one the cover is black. Maybe symbolizing district 12 and the miners. The second one is focused on katniss as the symbol of fire and the mockingjay. The third books cover is very light hearted. It goes from black which is dark, to a red which still is dark to a light blue which is like a sigh of relief. Maybe it means that the mockingjay is free. That all the districts are free. Maybe it means that they are trying to break free. Also if you notice the lines in each one. The first one is trapping the bird. The second is like a scope trying to shoot it/hunt it down. The third one has not fully connected lines. The third book just says clearly that they are breaking free.

I don’t know if anyone can follow what I’m trying to say because I couldn’t type as fast as the words were coming to me. It came out as a ramble. Hopefully it makes sense.

It’s all about the progression of the mockingjay. In book one the mockingjay is entirely enclosed in the pin and utterly lifeless. Symbolizing that the capitol was still in complete control. In book two the mockingjay is still enclosed but is more lifelike and gives the appearance of breaking free from the pins enclosing. Symbolizing the beginning of the rebellion. Symbolizing the spark. Symbolizing that they are trying to break free. In the third book the mockingjay is clearly lifelike and free of their binds. Symbolizing, possibly, that no matter if the have defeated the capitol, or if they have died, they are, irrevocably, free.

The colors go along with the first paragraph. Black symbolizing the suppression and devastation of the districts. Red symbolizing the spark of the rebellion. Symbolizing the girl on fire’s spark. And blue symbolizing beautiful and complete freedom.

well…Jacqueline said everything I was going to say.
all except with catching fire the mockingjay was encircled by what looks like a clock, or a map of the arena the were in.
so yeah, there is DEFINATLY symbolism with the covers

  • ruekat

well the catching fire cover does have a clock on it under the mocking jay not a scope and i also aggree with Jacqueline she pretty much nailed it.

  • Alison

Yes! When I first saw the Mockingjay cover, it was easy to read it. The bird and the circle things breaking apart meant (well, I think) that they were finally breaking free of the Capitol’s hold!

  • kaleigh

@Ruekat: My first impression was a scope but that does make sense too.

  • SPARK

i agree completely with Jacqueline. first, the districts are allcontrolled with no hope, then they break from the Capitol and start to fight when they finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, then they are completely free

  • Annie B

Yes! I believe the bird is encased in the pin, first, because it’s the very beginning of the rebellion… it’s expanding in catching fire, then finally free in mockingjay!

  • Maysilee

Yeah. And I agree with ALL the ideas above. I think everyone covered what I was gonna say.

  • misswriter

I believe that they are all positioned to show a progression from being controlled by the Capitol to being free to have a better life.

  • galegalegale

honestly people. Long story short: it does say something about the story, but we won’t realize it until we’ve read it. it’s that simple!

  • Ilovepeeta

galegalegale everyone is just talking and giving their thoughts, if you don’t care don’t read them!

  • mockingbird

I think the cover shows that the mockingbird(Katniss) will let out all her energy to fight against the capitol. My evidence is that on the previous covers, the bird is inside a closed ring which probably resembles the arena. Most of these thoughts are just estimations. Anyway, and she might have to travel around the districts. Since there is no longer a ring around the bird, the sky’s the limit for her to defeat the capitol.
