About 50 Actresses Have Already Auditioned For The Role Of Katniss
About 50 actresses have auditioned so far for the lead role of Katniss Everdeen. While most of those actresses came to Zane through traditional means, she tells WSJ that her office is also tracking potential casting options online through a website run by Breakdown Services. On the website, actors can submit resumes based on a description of the role of Katniss:
* 15 to 20 years old
* Caucasian
* “underfed but strong”
* “naturally pretty underneath her tomboyishness”Zane and her coworkers are also opening thousands of pieces of mail, from unknowns who’ve sent in letters and headshots, pleading their case to be Katniss. Though skeptical their Katniss will be found in that stack of mail, Zane and producers at Lionsgate say they are very open to the idea of casting an unknown in the lead role.
“It’s not that we won’t consider incredible actors in this age group,” Lionsgate’s Alli Shearmur told WSJ. “But we’re very much open to the people who’ve never been seen before, who could walk in the door and announce themselves.”
Shearmur said the big box-office draw for The Hunger Games movie will be the title itself — not necessarily any particular actors. The audition process includes reading lines typed up from the actual book (since the screenplay is still being worked on, and is being kept under wraps) and a toy Nerf bow and arrow set.
