“Mockingjay” is not as impeccably plotted as “The Hunger Games,” but none theless retains its fierce, chilly fascination. At its best the trilogy channels the political passion of “1984,” the memorable violence of “A Clockwork Orange,” the imaginative ambience of “The Chronicles of Narnia” and the detailed inventiveness of “Harry Potter.” The specifics of the dystopian universe, and the fabulous pacing of the complicated plot, give the books their strange, dark charisma. It would take too long to catalog the elaborate gadgets and gizmos and creatures and torments that Collins has devised, but among them are the jabberjays, birds that reproduce the screams of loved ones being tortured, to rattle the tributes; the brilliantly conceived costumes that seem to trail flames as Katniss rides into the arena for her first Hunger Games; an arena in the shape of a lethal ticking clock face; and tracker jackers, genetically altered wasps that can hijack memories and distort them to change the very essence of who a person is.

The trilogy balances seriousness with special effects, a fundamental furious darkness with fast-paced storytelling, so that the books manage to be simultaneously disturbing and fun. They contain a sharp satire of celebrity culture, mindless tabloidism and decadence, as well as crusading teenagers trying to save the world; but they also resist our hunger for clear definitions of good and evil, our sentimental need for a worthwhile cause, our desire for happy or simple endings, or even for the characters we like not to be killed or tortured or battered or bruised in graphic ways. Like the evil Capitol that controls and shadows its world, the trilogy tends to use the things we are attached to against us.

All three books have burned up the charts. The Hunger Games alone has more than 2.9 million copies in print and spent over 100 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Now that the series is finished (Collins says, definitively, that Katniss’ story “was concluded in Mockingjay”), all eyes are on the upcoming movies. Lionsgate optioned The Hunger Games, and Collins, a seasoned scriptwriter with several kids’ shows under her belt, wrote the first draft of the screenplay. “Adapting a book into a two-hour viewing experience is a challenge,” she says. “You want to preserve the essence while making the film stand on its own.” With the script completed, fans are arguing feverishly over who should play Katniss—but the film, tentatively scheduled for 2012, hasn’t been cast. And though Collins has yet to meet Games’ director, Gary Ross, “we’ve spoken twice on the phone, and I think he’s going to be terrific. He’s full of genuine excitement; when he talks about a scene, you can’t help visualizing it. I can’t wait to see his vision come to life on the screen.”

New York, NY (September 2, 2010) — Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, announced today that Mockingjay, the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, sold more than 450,000 copies (hardcover and eBook) in its first week on sale in the U.S., debuting at #1 on both the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists. In addition, Scholastic announced that it has gone back to press for an additional 400,000 copies, bringing the total number of copies in print for Mockingjay in the U.S. to 1.6 million since its publication on August 24, 2010.

“After months of anticipation, sales for Mockingjay have exceeded all expectations, as has the outpouring from countless teen and adult fans of the trilogy who have been blogging, tweeting, and coming out to meet Suzanne Collins on the first leg of her North American tour,” said Ellie Berger, President of the Scholastic Trade Publishing division.

First published in September 2008, The Hunger Games was an instant bestseller, appealing to both teen readers and adults. It has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 100 consecutive weeks since publication, and there are more than 6 million copies of all books in the trilogy in print in the U.S. to date (more than 2.6 million copies of The Hunger Games since September 2008 and more than 1.8 million copies of its sequel Catching Fire in one year since its September 2009 publication).
