Review of Catching Fire in the New York Times

I really enjoyed this article; it was written by the same author that wrote the novel Elsewhere.

Collins has done that rare thing. She has written a sequel that improves upon the first book. As a reader, I felt excited and even hopeful: could it be that this series and its characters were actually going somewhere?

Toss Up Tuesday! Fanmade Bookmarks!

I got this email and wanted to share it with you all!  I hope the author wont mind, just thought it was so nice!  Also, I might have to get a hold of one of those book marks!

Hi!

First of all, I really enjoy your website; it’s so nice to share the same enthusiasm for the books.
I am a high school English teacher in Erie, Illinois (small town near the Quad Cities–opposite side of state from Chicago).  After I read The Hunger Games this past summer, I knew I had to get it for my 9th grade general English class.  This group is almost all boys, all have very low reading skills, and all HATE to read.  I convinced my principal to buy 15 new hardback copies for them (we’ve NEVER purchased hard copy novels–only paperbacks!).  I told him that I had a gut feeling that these kids would love this book & it would be money well spent.  Of course they loved it and now we’re trying to convince him to buy hard copies of Catching Fire!  I’ve never read a book in class that every kid seems to love–until The Hunger Games.  It’s so inspiring to see these kids excited about reading.
So this brings me to my reason for this email.  I’ve been making bookmarks for my students for years.  It’s cheaper than buying them & I love to introduce a book we’re reading & get them excited for it by giving them their own bookmarks before we begin reading.  Most of the boys could care less about bookmarks…until they got their Hunger Games bookmark.
I’ve been selling my bookmarks during the summer and over the holidays on eBay for a few years.  In recent years, the Twilight ones have done very well.  Then this fall I noticed NO ONE makes The Hunger Games or Catching Fire bookmarks.  Since my students we’re so excited for their bookmarks, I decided to start listing them on eBay.  Just this week I listed a few & plan to list more as we get closer to the holidays.
I thought I’d let you know in case you want to share a link with your readers (this is just one of the bookmarks–click on “seller’s other items” to see more):
After doing a little research on the internet, I couldn’t find any bookmarks to purchase for the books.  This saddens me, because I think they are worthy of more exposure & excitement.  I hope you agree!
Thanks for reading this incredibly long note & keep up the great work on your website!
Sincerely,
