Travis of TheHogsHead.org brings us more beautiful insight into the world of the Hunger Games.

But the more subtle version is the dehumanization of the citizens of Panem. What is valued, as is evident by the Capitol, is melodrama, entertainment, and fashion. The stylists working on Katniss are so out of touch with reality that they don’t even think she looks like a human until they’ve given her an extreme makeover. This constant emphasis on the superficial creates a horrifying situation far too much like our own: Capitol people are scandalized when someone’s fashion isn’t right, but are entertained by gruesome violence and death.

It seems another popular Harry Potter Blogger has jumped in to give us  more “Mockingjay” insights!

Peeta tells Katniss before the start of the 74th Games, “I want to die as myself.” That’s a much easier thing to say when one actually knows oneself, as Peeta does. He will not allow himself to be dehumanized by the games, because he knows who he is as a human.

Katniss, on the other hand, does not. She doesn’t know what a “spirit” is (HG, p. 121). Cinna, her fashion guru who dresses her as the girl on fire, tells her that people can’t help admiring her spirit. Katniss’s thoughts in response go like this: “My spirit. This is a new thought. I’m not exactly sure what it means, but it suggests I’m a fighter.”

With the Twilight saga and the tomes of Harry Potter, it seems like these days Hollywood’s gamble on turning tween novels into movies has paid off. In fact, it is starting to hardly seem like a gamble at all with bastardized versions of Twilight like Vampire Diaries helping to resurrect the likes of the CW. (For the record, Vampire Diaries was written before Twilight.) Well folks, I think I have found it . . . the Next Big Thing – Hunger Games and its sequel, Catching Fire. Now, I’m far from the first person to uncover the magic of these little gems, but I want to go on record with this prophecy. Mark my words, Muggles – in the years to come, this series will become a household name, its story and characters infused into every pore of society, its title on the tip of every tongue.

Haymitch has absolutely no definition, meaning or history whatsoever. The name is comepletely made up by Suzanne Collins. However, Haymitch’s last name, Abernathy, is the name of a famous Civil Rights Leader.

Cinna was a poet in one of Shakespeare’s plays who tried to start a rebellion. He conspirated against the leader Julius Caesar and was thus killed… does this give us any hints?

Collins has done that rare thing. She has written a sequel that improves upon the first book. As a reader, I felt excited and even hopeful: could it be that this series and its characters were actually going somewhere?

The mood of “Catching Fire” is definitely more stressful and less empowering than “Hunger Games.” Though she finds unexpected allies along the way, Katniss seems to be utterly without hope of her own, or her family’s, survival. But her journey is no less compelling, because we, at least, know that she’ll live for book three. And judging by this book’s agonizing cliffhanger, the next installment will be one hell of a ride.

Borders filmed a one-hour Borders Book Club discussion with Collins, three adults (including a librarian) and six teenagers. On release day, the

Borders has filmed such discussions with just three other YA authors: Stephenie Meyer for Eclipse, Sarah Dessen for Along for the Ride and Christopher Paolini for Brisingr. With Scholastic’s permission, Borders also created a mockingjay pin, which it plans to sell for 50% off its $6.99 retail price with the purchase of Catching Fire. “It seems rather silly to add my two cents of praise to a book that’s been 1) acclaimed by Stephenie Meyer and Stephen King, not to mention a whole lot of other book reviewers; 2) snatched up by Lionsgate to be made into a movie, written by its very author; and 3) sitting in the New York Times best-seller list for 48 weeks. I’ll just say that if you haven’t yet read Suzanne Collins’ “Hunger Games,” then I’m kind of jealous of you.
